Hand and power tools are a necessity on any work site. However, there are a number of hazards involved in using both hand and power tools which can cause significant injuries (the use of screwdrivers alone causes tens of thousands of injuries each year).
That is why OSHA is encouraging employers and employees to recognize the potential hazards and identify ways to avoid them. Here are few OSHA “tips” on how to control hazards associated with the use of hand and power tools in the workplace:
1. Keep all tools in good condition with regular maintenance.
2. Use the right tool for the job.
3. Examine each tool for damage before use and do not use damaged tools.
4. Operate tools according to the manufacturers’ instructions.
5. Use the proper personal protective equipment.
OSHA’s Construction Safety and Health Outreach Program is a resource that offers more information on identifying the dangers of hand and power tools and safety precautions to prevent employee injury.
