State has one of country’s lowest workplace fatality rates

Vermont had one of the lowest rates of workplace fatalities in the country in 2004, tying it for second with New Hampshire, according to a report released this week by the AFL-CIO.

Vermont had seven workplace deaths in 2004, which translates into 2.1 deaths per 100,000 workers, nearly half the national average of 4.1 deaths, the AFL-CIO said in its 15th annual report, “Death on the Job: The Toll of Neglect.”

Rhode Island had the lowest fatality rate at 1.3 per 100,000 workers while Wyoming had the highest at 15.5.

Nationwide, there were 5,703 workplace-related deaths in 2004, an increase of 128 deaths over the previous year.
