The month of August has many occupational & workplace safety related events, seminars and safety expos. Here is a list for the last week of August 2008.

Public Safety Expo

    This free family event features over 40 Law Enforcement, Search and Rescue, Fire, Medical Personnel and other agencies who provide demonstrations throughout the day. This is an opportunity for the public to meet and talk to public safety personnel, see many different types of equipment, and watch interesting demonstrations. There will be many interactive opportunities throughout the day. A different demonstration will be scheduled for every half hour. Demonstrations will include such things as taser, motor vehicle extrication, rappelling,canine searches, and much more. In addition, children can sit in squad car, pet a police or rescue dog, talk to a police officer, etc.

OSHA 2264 Permit Required Confined Space Entry

    This course is designed to increase students’ knowledge of hazards associated with confined space entry and their environment.

Hillsborough County AARP Driver Safety Classes

    Driver safety program: h2u, 119 oakfield drive, room 258, brandon. Aarp will host two four-hour driver safety classes from 1-5 p.m. Monday aug. 25 and tuesday aug. 26. Seniors must bring their driver’s licenses to the first class, but no driving will be necessary. Classes with fewer than 20 people registered will be canceled.

Principles of Lasers and Laser Safety (L-125)

    This two-day introductory level course is designed to give the participant with limited laser and optics background a solid introduction to lasers and safety concepts based upon ANSI Z136.1, FDA/CDRH, OSHA, and state requirements.
    Attendees are eligible for 16 CEC’s Awarded by AAHP.

OSHA 510 Standards for the Construction Industry

    This course is a prerequisite to the OTI 500 course. It will cover OSHA policies, procedures, and standards for the construction industry as well as safety and health principles. Each section of the OSHA Construction Standards will be covered. Special emphasis will be placed on those areas that are more hazardous, using OSHA standards as a guide. OSHA’s 29CFR1926 Construction Safety Standard will be provided. Upon successful course completion, the student will receive an OSHA Construction Industry Safety and Health 30-hour course completion card.

Certified Occupational Safety Specialist

    COSS Program. This 5-day course is designed to build core competencies in the field of safety. Homework is an integral part of this course. Workplace Violence Prevention Seminar

    Ever wondered how to handle violence in the workplace? Norfolk Police Department officer Steve Hecker will offer tips on workplace safety at two seminars at the Gothenburg Public Library.

    Hecker was involved in investigations of the 2002 US Bank robbery and homicides in Norfolk.
